Preplant Boron

Question:

One this morning about applying all of your boron in the fertilizer preplant and using no foliar applications. He wanted to use a pound instead of half pound…is this a good idea? Or better stated…is this an acceptable alternative to half pound foliar. Also is the pound per acre excessive to the point of yield reduction? Thanks.

I know a 2X rate (1 pound/acre applied to foliage) can burn leaves. I don’t think 1 pound in soil will cause a problem. It will leach, so depending on rainfall between now and peak bloom, there may or may not be a sufficient amount available for root uptake. But in terms of injury to peanut, applying 1 pound now with other fertilizer should not injure peanuts. It will be distributed through the profile. I would be more concerned about not having enough if we get a fair amount of rainfall. David.
