Frost Prediction Thursday Oct 18 Peanut Notes No. 134 2018

There is a frost warning for counties in SE Virginia for later this week. See the information in a previous Peanut Note on how to access the VT InfoNet and frost advisory. There needs to be a minimum of 72 hours between digging and frost to avoid freeze damage and Seg 2 status. The 72 hours assumes good drying conditions. In addition to the kernel drying which results in less water to freeze and thaw, an insulation barrier of air is created as kernels shrink. The issue is generally not the most mature pods but those lagging behind that are immature and thus have higher water content. But they all end up in the sample that is checked and the percentage of damaged kernels is very low to prompt a Seg 2 grade.
