Question:
Can you mix Hemi with Gramoxone, Zidua, and Basagran if no serious injury from thrips?
Jordan:
I know you can with acephate. I have not looked at this combination with Hemi but I suspect it is compatible. Make sure you include nonionic surfactant. When applied with paraquat, the surfactant rate is 1 pint per 100 gallons.
Reisig:
David is correct that Hemi should be compatible in that mix. My only clarification is on the surfactant. Those herbicides likely already include enough surfactant in the spray solution, so I would not add extra surfactant just for Hemi in this situation. If Hemi were applied alone, then it would need a non-ionic surfactant.
Jordan:
Thanks Dominic. Herbicides are formulated with a range of emulsifiers, etc. that may function like surfactants. I haven’t found a product label for a foliar-applied herbicide that adjusts the adjuvant recommendation based on assuming a tank-mix partner brings enough in its formulation to serve in the role of surfactant. I’ve always recommended the surfactant one would use if the herbicide is applied alone unless the label states otherwise. Even when paraquat plus Basagran is applied with a Group 15 (like Dual Magnum), I still recommend nonionic surfactant. In practice, I think folks leave out the surfactant in some cases with this mixture. I’ve discussed this with colleagues in other states and company folks. And folks have shown me season-long data in a complete program where the nonionic surfactant did not help with the mixture mentioned above. But, I still recommend nonionic surfactant given I don’t think the label states not too, and I want to make sure we get as much out of the herbicide as possible.
The paraquat labels have 1 pint per 100 gallons, which is half of what most other herbicides have on the label (0.25% v/v is what products like Storm and Ultra Blazer call for - 1 quart per 100 gallons.)
Sorry for the long response.
