Peanut Response to Kudos OD Rate in Large-Plot Trials in North Carolina and Virginia

The prohexadione calcium formulation Kudos OD is available for use in peanut. Research was conducted in North Carolina and Virginia in 10 trials with Kudos OD applied twice at 5.4 oz/acre or 7.2 oz/acre. A non-treated control was included. The first application was made when 50% of laterals from adjacentrows touched followed by the second application 2-3 weeks later. The interaction of trial × treatment was significant for row visibility and main stem height but not pod yield. When pooled over trials, row visibility (1-10 scale where 1 = flat canopy and 10 = triangular-shaped rows) was 4.0, 7.3, and 8.4 for Kudos OD rates of 0, 5.4, and 7.2 oz/acre, respectively. Main stem height was 46, 37, and 35 cm for these respective rates of Kudos OD. Pod yield was greater when Kudos OD was applied at 7.2 oz/acre compared with non-treated peanut; yield following Kudos OD at 5.4 oz/acre was intermediate.

Peanut Yield, Market Grade Characteristics, Financial Return, and Leaf Spot Reaction in Large-Plot Variety Trials in North Carolina in the 2025 Growing Season

Thirteen large-plot trials were conducted in North Carolina in 2025 to compare disease reaction, pod yield, market grade characteristics, and economic value of the Virginia market type varieties Bailey II, Emery, NC 20, and NC 21. Leaf spot incidence was similar for Emery and NC 21 and greater than incidence for Bailey II and NC 20.  NC 20 often expressed lower incidence than Bailey II. When pooled over trials, pod yield was similar for all four varieties. However, financial return at the loan rate was lower for NC 20 than Bailey II when pooled over 13 trials; financial return of Emery and NC 21 was intermediate between Baily II and NC 20. Seed quality from 2024 production was lower for NC 20 than other varieties, and this may explain in part the lower financial value for this variety associated primarily with lower sound mature kernels, lower extra largekernels, and higher sound splits. Additional research will be conducted in 2026 to compare these varieties at multiple locations across North Carolina.
