The following information is from Clemson University and was prepared by Dr. Kirk. This week and through the weekend, I’m working with folks at the Peanut Belt Research Station at Lewiston-Woodville to try to get a better handle on how many hours prior to a frost/freeze you need to stop digging to avoid freeze damage and SEG 2 status. We had a relatively good study on this in the field in 2023 but did not have as many digging dates as needed to draw a solid conclusion. Last year, we had a wider range of digging dates but missed the frost/freeze by a few degrees. Just from a research standpoint, I’m hoping for a freeze early Tuesday morning of this coming week. We will dig each day from Thursday of this week (November 6) through Tuesday of next week. I plan to take moisture samples early next week for all digging dates and work with the Cooperative Grading Service to determine freeze damage. Hoping for the best.

I suspect the recommendation of stopping digging will likely stay at 96 hours before the freeze/frost event. But that will be influenced by the data we collect.
