Late-Season Weed Control Peanut Notes No. 161 2024

Question:

If I have peanuts that are almost meeting and some of the rows are closed but they have some fine weeds coming up right now, do I have any options to control them? By fine, I mean I can't even identify them. They're so small. Do I have any options of getting rid of them?

Jordan:

Options certainly include clethodim for grass control. Not sure on broadleaf weeds you might have. You could consider clethodim plus 2,4-DB plus crop oil. This is an unknown because you don’t know for sure what you have. But this is a safe mix that suppresses a lot of weeds.

Most questions come when weeds are all but too large to control with herbicides. I seldom get a question about weeds too small to identify. It may pay to wait in case this is a unique broadleaf weed or sedge and then you know what you have.
