Paraquat Around Planting Peanut Notes No. 60 2025

Question:

Can I use paraquat preemergence on peanuts? If so, what rate?

Jordan:

Applying paraquat after planting is an in-season use, and the rate that can be applied from that point forward is low compared with the burndown rates we use (e.g., cannot exceed 22 ounces for the season.) As long as the peanut seed are not exposed to the spray, there will be no injury. However, higher rates (burndown rates) would not be a labeled use. I suggest spraying prior to planting. This could be 3 pints, depending on what you are trying to control.

Question:

If I spray paraquat on beds before planting, how long should I wait?

Jordan:

Just a day or so in terms of waiting. I have noticed better weed control when paraquat is applied a day or so before planting rather than right after planting. Coverage of weeds is better before planting.
