Peanuts Planted but K was not Applied Peanut Notes No. 80 2026

Peanut plant near Rocky Mount

Question:

Peanuts are coming up and we did not apply K. K Index is a 50. Should I apply now?

Jordan:

K index of 50 calls for 30 pounds potash. That is getting close to maintenance. I don’t think a lot of it will make it to rooting zone but I don’t think that amount will interfere with calcium nutrition in pegging zone. So, whatever helps you sleep on this one. Last year Tim Britton had a trial in Johnston County and soil test from previous fall showed that K was not needed. Checked in early July and index was low. Applied K-Mag and got a significant yield increase and financial return above cost. It wouldn’t hurt to look at a soil sample later in year and consider an application then.
