I hope we are in a pattern now to receive rainfall more frequently. However, we know this may not be the case. We have grown to rely on preemergence herbicides as our starting point for weed management in peanuts. I suggest you consider applying pendimethalin (Prowl H2O and various other formulations) prior to planting with uniform incorporation.
If you have already bedded and there is enough moisture to get peanuts up, I would not try to incorporate and then re-establish rows at this time. But if you have not bedded (or disked for the last time prior to planting flat), I would incorporate herbicide. This gives us significant buffer if our preemergence herbicides are not activated with rain. Historically, metolachlor (Dual Magnum and other formulations) was incorporated, especially for yellow nutsedge control. I would not apply more than 1/2X rate of a metolachlor product prior to planting with incorporation. I would apply the full labeled rate of a pendimethalin product.
Annual grasses, especially Texas panicum, and Palmer amaranth are major issues across the state. Incorporating pendimethalin will help in a major way with these weeds (and others.) This will be especially the case if a Group 15 plus Valor SX (other flumioxazin formulations are available) is applied preemergence right after planting and we don’t receive rain for several weeks.
I would not apply a Group 15 plus Brake without Valor SX. Brake needs considerably more water for activation than Valor SX does.
