Stocks of Some Chlorpyrifos Products Can Be Used in 2024 on Peanut Peanut Notes No. 44 2024

Jordan question to NCDA&CS Pesticide Division:

Several extension specialists in peanuts have been trying to determine if Lorsban or any other granular product containing chlorpyrifos can be used legally on peanuts in 2024. Extension specialists in Georgia, for example, have been indicating that existing stocks of granular chlorpyrifos can be used in 2024. I have been asked this question (I'm sure Dr. Brandenburg has too) on several occasions. In my reading of the EPA directive, I wasn't sure if chlorpyrifos can be used on peanuts in 2024. There is a lot at stake if the wrong answer is assumed. It would be great if I could send out something in writing to our extension agents in North Carolina.

NCDA&CS Pesticide Division:

Attached is the most recent information we have regarding chlorpyrifos use. In the attachment is a list developed by the USDA and reviewed by the EPA. According to this information, the products highlighted in green are available for use in 2024 and, if labeled for peanuts, can be used on peanuts.

Jordan:

Do you interpret this as growers can apply existing stock to their peanuts in 2024? I just want to be very clear if I am asked.

NCDA&CS Pesticide Division:

Yes, if the product is one of those highlighted in green in the USDA’s memo and the product container the grower has is labeled for peanuts, the product can be used on peanuts. Those highlighted in the other color cannot be used.
