Question:
Is it safe to use Anthem Flex postemergence on peanuts with Gramoxone 8 oz/acre and 1.5 pints/acre Storm? Had a sales rep promoting this as a cheaper source of Zidua.
Jordan:
My issue is not the Anthem Flex, although of all the Group 15 herbicides, you will get more injury and stunting for a week or so after application compared with Dual Magnum or Zidua (mixed with paraquat.) The injury is transient, and I have always seen the peanuts recover well. The rate of Storm is too high. A mixture of Storm plus Paraquat plus Anthem Flex (and other Group 15 herbicides) is very common in the southeastern US. It can be used here, but I encourage paraquat plus Basagran rather than paraquat plus Storm.
I prefer to wait until later for Storm or Ultra Blazer (herbicide in Storm with Basagran) because another spray is likely needed. I think we need to avoid as much selection pressure on PPOs as possible. Let the paraquat plus Basagran do what it can.
I’ve provided a link from the southeast on Storm mixes with paraquat and Anthem Flex. Good information here. Storm 16 oz/acre plus paraquat (normal rate) plus Anthem Flex 3 oz/acre is okay. I would not spray Storm 24 oz/acre plus paraquat with or without any Group 15. Storm at 16 oz/acre is okay. I have had a trial or two where Storm plus paraquat had slightly less annual grass control than Basagran plus paraquat.
I have also heard that Anthem Flex is less expensive than Zidua.
