Question:

What varieties of peanuts will be more resistant to tomato spotted wilt in future?

We have NC 20, NC 21, and NC 25. Seed is still limited for NC 21 and NC 25. A big focus has been leaf spot. Either way, we are a ways off from something better than Bailey II on TSWV. Where are you seeing more virus?

I’m up between Windsor and Smithfield, Virginia, and spotted wilt is bad in both Bailey II and Emery.

How early did they plant and what insecticide?

They planted some early like April 25-30. Some of the peanuts were planted later May 10-20. I don’t see much difference in planting dates. They all use Admire in-furrow and Hemi once up. Some were sprayed a second time. And I probably wouldn’t have been that aggressive but same area last year had a lot of TSW. I really thought it was a great growing season early, maybe a touch dry till recently. It’s been wet last few weeks. Some fields are rough.

Jordan:

High risk with early planting. Imidacloprid can increase risk physiologically but we have dodged that with variety genetics. If peanuts take a while to make a stand that can increase risk.

We also might have pockets in NC/VA where the virus is more prevalent. Vegetation around the field could play into it, although we don’t have a good way to incorporate that into our tool.

Dry conditions can affect the plant’s ability to handle the virus.
