Planting peanuts near Lewiston North Carolina

Question:

Should I apply Proline or Velum in the seed furrow at planting? I have rotations anywhere from 3 to 10 years with all cotton.

Jordan:

Dr Shew and I did a lot of work with Proline. Most of that work was done 10-15 years ago. This fungicide suppressed CBR but that disease is uncommon now and resistance in Bailey II to CBR is good. Having a lot of cotton and not soybean really helps too. In my opinion you do not need Proline.

More recently, we did a great deal of work with Velum. Multiple trials included rotations with a wide range of nematodes. Occasionally we would see suppression of some nematodes but not as much as metam sodium and not consistently. I’ve never documented a positive yield response to Velum. Cotton, in the rotation with peanut, really helps suppress nematodes. In my opinion you do not need Velum.

Cotton is a great rotation with peanuts in terms of CBR and nematodes. Proline and Velum are unlikely to bring a positive return on the investment with your rotations and field histories based on our conversation.
