Peanut Maturity Dan Anco Clemson Peanut Notes No. 241 2023

Sent October 9

As of last week the state was over 25% dug and more than 15% harvested. While remaining fields continue to range in maturity, the days are showing signs of having entered fall in earnest. Temperatures in the 40s greatly slow peanut maturity and can stall it out. While the next few days will see somewhat warmer conditions, temperatures following the likely coming rain later this week look like they will cool off again during night. This limits what we would likely expect should fields remain standing to develop maturity. When looking at multiple samples from the same field over time, our guideline for assessing continued progress in maturity development is approximately 1% OBB per day between samples. If the amount gained per day drops below this (for example, I gained 3% OBB after waiting 7 days), we can shift to determining when will allow for field conditions that will help us dig and recover as many of the produced crop as possible. The coming rain should help to soften many fields, as grounds have been hardening in areas.
