Collapse ▲I was recently asked what rate of Thimet was needed to suppress thrips and minimize tomato spotted wilt. The rate is 5 pounds of a 20% product per acre. We always need to use the correct rate for all pesticides. We normally don’t have issues with in-furrow insecticides in terms of phytotoxicity when we apply the insecticide at rates higher than recommended and labeled (often because we are not calibrated well enough.) Thimet/Phorate is different. On our coarse soils with low organic matter, we can get significant injury from Thimet/Phorate. The injury is generally transient and peanuts recover. But the degree of injury you get that you did not expect (and the defoliation of some leaves) will get your attention, especially if you have not observed this before.
