I have been looking through some literature, but I am struggling to find an answer to the question, how late can we set a peg and have a harvestable pod? I know it depends on what type of fall we have, just wondering if you had a date that you normally went by?

In our planting date work with Bailey II over 5 years (see Peanut Notes No. 77 2025), approximate planting dates of June 1, June 15, and July 1 had yields that were about 84, 74, and 48 percent of early and mid-May plantings. I think the mid-June and July 1 planting dates are the best possible outcome for pegs that set in early August and the worse possible outcome, respectively. Maybe somewhere in between is what is likely to happen with pegs set in early August – 61% of maximum yield.
Probably worth a couple more chlorothalonil plus tebuconazole sprays and maybe a Provost Silver. Unfortunately, the longer they have to sit in the field, up your way in Virginia, the more vulnerable they are to Sclerotinia blight and freeze damage. The immature pods are most vulnerable to freeze damage, and the most mature pods will be in the orange or rust color at best, meaning a lot in the yellow color category when they have to be dug.
