Many of you know that Rick Brandenburg and I are involved in international research and outreach projects with peanut (primarily in Ghana and Malawi in Africa.) The links below are from a presentation I recently made in our department (two slide sets and a video recording of the presentation.) We feel like this work is important to do and that it complements our programs at NC State University and that these efforts do not compete with our programs here. We also don’t think we are creating competition for US peanut producers. The funding stream from these projects contributes to US and host-country research and extension programs.
Because the programs promote dual value (US and international partners) both groups gain. For example, the NCPGA and NPB generously support research and extension programs in North Carolina, and addressing the needs of NC peanut growers is our priority as faculty members and extension specialists. However, peanut acreage in NC is limited, and that limits check off funds when considering all of the programs and needs across CALS to support peanuts (compared, for example, to Georgia.) Funding through the Peanut Innovation Lab (Feed the Future, USAID) fills in the gaps we often have for NC activities in a climate where we have to seek more and more external funding to run and maintain our programs at NC State University.
Peanut Innovation Lab funding in previous cycles (Peanut CRSP, for example) supported graduate students and technical support at NC State University, and the focus of their research and activities was on issues faced by North Carolina peanut farmers. More recently, funding through the Peanut Innovation Lab has allowed us to update our Peanut Risk Tool for North Carolina. The updated tool is in a new format that will allow Rick, Barbara and I to more easily make changes to the program in a timely manner. This will help the risk tool be more relevant for peanut growers in North Carolina. This update would not have been possible without the current support provided by the Peanut Innovation Lab and the initial support (years ago) by USDA.
