Applying Herbicides Under Hot and Dry Conditions Peanut Notes No. 68 2019

Under hot and dry conditions it is difficult to know whether to spray or not. There likely are scattered weeds (if not a real flush) that are up and they will continue to grow, especially Palmer amaranth. Even though peanuts might be stressed due to dry weather it is most likely best to apply herbicides for the weeds. Our PPO inhibitors and paraquat can kill weeds only when they are small (PPOs can kill bigger weeds than paraquat at the rates used in peanuts.)  Spraying now is likely the best option in a difficult situation. After rain, we likely will have another significant flush, and that will require an additional application.
