Start Clean Peanut Notes No. 39 2019

Whether in no till, strip till, or conventional till, it is paramount to start with no weeds present when peanuts begin to emerge. Be heavy handed with glyphosate and paraquat until peanuts begin to emerge. Do not spray glyphosate or paraquat (at burndown rates) if peanuts have started cracking (even just a little cracking).

While it seems that most field conditions have allowed farmers to conventionally till and kill weeds with the tillage, some farmers are behind and big pigweeds and marestail might be present. Many times tillage will only cover up some of these weeds with soil and they have the potential to come back. This is a case where a burndown spray even in a conventional till system can be really helpful.
