Question About Zinc Toxocity in Peanut Peanut Notes No. 170 2019

— Written By

Any idea how many acres in NC are impacted or restricted from growing peanuts due to high zinc levels?

Jordan answer:

I suspect 1% at the most. We have really driven home the importance of checking pH and zinc levels and avoiding those fields. I am copying David Hardy just in case.

Hardy answer:

On a yearly basis from recent data, it appears that about 7 to 10% of our samples have Zn index of 250 or above. We would not advise planting peanuts at levels this high or higher given potential for hot spots in the field and soil test results being a field averaging assessment. We never really know what is done.
