Dan Anco Comments Clemson Peanut Notes No. 246

NASS estimates this week have us at 70% dug with half of total SC peanut acres having already been combined. Digging additional remaining acres through the end of the week in the central to the north part of the state should consider waiting until the cool weather forecast for Monday night passes. Depending on the area, lows in and around Monday are estimated anywhere from 34 to 37°F. Lows above this range generally should be okay (lows above 38°F), provided the forecast doesn’t change. Waiting until the cool weather passes helps reduce the chance of slow drying peanuts getting excessive frost damage and being designated seg II. Peanut dug earlier in the week should have dried enough to not be at frost risk, even if some rain is received today.
