Spots in the Peanut Canopy Peanut Notes No. 171 2021

Question:

We are seeing spots in the canopy and leaf shed.  Is this a failure in leaf spot control?

Jordan:

This is caused by chemicals.  Cobra was sprayed on some of my peanuts a few weeks ago and injured peanuts like this and some of the leaves fell off in a similar fashion.  I don’t think this is the leaf spot we control with fungicides.

Follow up:

I've looked at the lesions under a hand lens and haven't seen any spores.

Shew:

Great pictures!  As David noted this is not leaf spot. As you can see in your excellent pix, the spots don’t really penetrate the lower leaf surface. All you see on the lower leaf surface is some yellowing, not a brown or black-brown lesion as you would have if it were a leaf spot.
