Collapse ▲I was recently asked if Valor should be put on with a burndown (in particular 2,4-D.) 2,4-D needs to be applied 28 days prior to planting to make sure peanut stands are not affected. Applying Valor, this far ahead of planting is not advised because in this case you would lose 4 weeks of residual control in the peanut crop. Sometimes Valor plays out before we want it to even when applied right after we plant. My recommendation is that growers in reduced tillage systems use multiple burndowns without residual activity (of course 2,4-D has some residual, but I am referring to glyphosate and paraquat.) It is critical to have a clean seedbed when peanuts emerge and that takes multiple applications of a burndown herbicides. Some growers are including residual herbicides with glyphosate or paraquat when applied closer to planting (prior to.) The only challenge with that is if one thinks they will plant in a week or two, with untimely rains, it could be 3 or 4 weeks before planting. Residual weed control in the crop is shortened.
