I was asked about the time interval between applications of residual herbicides like Dual Magnum. The context was if Dual Magnum, Outlook, or Warrant is applied PRE at planting, is there an issue with a follow up of the same herbicide or a different one in this group (as well as Zidua or Anthem Flex) within just a week or so (PRE herbicide right after planting followed by an early POPST application of paraquat and Basagran with one of these residuals, for example.) I have not observed a negative impact on yield when the sequential applications of the same or different herbicides are applied close together. Eric Prosko (UGA) and I conducted studies a few years ago that really loaded up the system with multiple applications of these herbicides under weed-free conditions (frequent applications of the residual herbicides.) We did not see an issue with respect to yield from these treatments.

However, getting the rate correct is critical. Many years ago, I applied Dual Magnum at the old Dual rate (quart per acre) rather than 1.33 pints per acre on a sandy field and the peanuts were stunted all year long. Look close at the label and make sure you match the rate, the product and the soil texture/organic matter accurately to avoid injury.

While I am confessing, at about the same time, I sprayed a couple of trials with herbicides mixed for 15 GPA but my sprayer was calibrated for 20 GPA. I got great weed control from many of the residual treatments but more injury than expected. Double-check your calibrations and rates. That was a painful spring! It reminded me of the saying, there’s never enough time to do it right but there’s always enough time to do it over. Unfortunately, in some cases you cannot do a do over.
