Great question on yield response for 5 versus 3 plants. The data from on-farm trials in 2021 show no difference between 4, 5 and 6 seed which is about 3.2, 4.0 and 5 plants per foot, respectively. In small plot work there was little difference between 3.2 and 4.5 plants per foot and no difference when one considers cost of seed. There was a big drop in yield with less than 3 plant per foot (2.5 in the small plot trial.) The caveats are at the bottom of the last slide. Not all fields are uniform so if you start low you might have gaps in some areas. TSWV is problematic at low seeding rates. That's why I recommend 5 seed to make sure I get 4 plants. That is somewhat conservative based on our recent data but that is where I stand. The on-farm trials were in very high yielding environments which can be associated with field uniformity, and these trials were conducted with Bailey II. Bailey II is a small-seeded variety which promotes uniform planting (fewer big kernels that fail to land in the planter cell.) The small plot trials were put in uniform areas of the field.
