Short Peanut Rotations Peanut Notes No. 26 2023

(Updated: March 8, 2023, 3:52 p.m.)
I had a question from a grower this morning about yield potential for peanuts planted every other year. In the same discussion, the grower asked about continuous peanuts. Here are some comments about those questions. A link to a data set is provided.
  1. Yield of peanuts planted continuously will be around half that of peanuts in a rotation of 4 or more years with corn or cotton between peanuts. But yields in continuous peanuts will likely not go much lower. In a long-term rotation trial at Lewiston, peanut yields hit this low point, but they never yielded that much lower. CBR was present in that trial but even in continuous peanuts this pathogen essentially went away. An ecological equilibrium is reached in these systems with winners and losers.
  2. Having peanuts the year before peanuts is more damaging to peanuts than soybeans planted prior to peanuts.
  3. Double cropping wheat and soybeans has less negative impact on peanuts than full-season soybeans.
