Valor Rates Peanut Notes No. 61 2023

Question:

Do you think using valor at 3oz/ ac causes a yield reduction in peanuts?

Jordan:
3 oz is used routinely in South Carolina, Georgia, Florida and Alabama. Years ago when it first came out the 3 oz rate really hammered peanuts and that’s why I stick with the 2 oz rate. But I’ve had a lot of trials with 3 oz and the peanuts did fine. I do think if you get rain just as they come up the 3 oz rate will be more noticeable than the 2 oz rate. But peanuts do recover from both. Years ago we felt like our Virginia types were more susceptible than runner types. That was 15-20 years ago.

In Virginia and NC, I worry about anything (herbicide damage, thrips damage, etc.) that sets the crop back from a maturity standpoint. Splash up from a hard rain with 3 oz is one of my concerns. Partly because the damage can really stress people out. If we get multiple splash up events, the 3 oz rate will keep hammering peanuts while the 2 oz rate often does not.

To answer your question, the vast majority of time 3 oz is fine and there will be no yield hit. The same is certainly true for 2 oz. I often end up compromising and encouraging folks to use 2.5 oz if they want to increase the rate. Try really hard to spray within 3 days after planting.

Hope this helps.
