We often have escaped morningglory species in peanuts. Images of three common species are provided in the link. From a control standpoint, you can consider entireleaf and ivyleaf morningglory the same. The only difference is the trait for leaf shape. I will refer to this group as entireleaf morningglory. When small (two or three leaves), Cadre, Storm, Ultra Blazer, Cobra, and Gramoxone will control all three species. Sometimes Gramoxone will miss entireleaf at this stage depending on coverage. Basagran also suppresses all three morningglory species but it is very often not a stand-alone treatment. If any of these gets larger than three leaves, all herbicides except Cadre can struggle to control these morningglory species. Cadre will stop growth of morningglory plants that are large. They often just sit there. The trichomes (hairs) on the leaves can affect coverage and absorption of herbicides (note the trichomes on the entireleaf morningglory image.)

Pitted morningglory is more susceptible to the PPO herbicides listed above than entireleaf morningglory. Pitted morningglory has a smooth surface and this allows greater contact of herbicide solution with the leaf surface. There may be other physiological processes that affect selectivity, but hairs on leaves are a major feature affecting control. Cadre is absorbed by roots and shoots, and that can explain why it controls (suppresses) both relatively well, even when morningglory plants are large.

Pitted morningglory is not controlled by 2,4-DB. This herbicide will miss pitted morningglory almost every time. However, 2,4-DB will control the hairy morningglory species well, even when they are large. This is why a mixture of a PPO herbicide (Storm, Ultra Blazer, Cobra) with 2,4-DB is a good option. We can control the complete morningglory complex. I did not have an image of tall morningglory. The statements above reflect control of this morningglory.

Most residual herbicides (other than Cadre) we apply with PPO inhibitors or Gramoxone have little activity on emerged weeds. The exception is Anthem Flex. The Aim (carfentrazone) in Anthem Flex has good activity on emerged morningglory.
