Mitch Smith provided the following chart indicating how pod maturity is developing in the Pitt County area. Mitch indicated that considerable variation in the pace of maturity has been noted depending on location and weather patterns during the summer and into the fall. Peanuts in some areas will not reach optimum maturity until October. This is the case for 40% of the samples processed. In contrast, very the vast majority of samples in 2022, with many of the same growers, reached optimum maturity prior to October.
