Collapse ▲The following e-mail was sent on Thursday October 19 to NC State Extension Agents:
Frost is predicted for southeastern Virginia and some areas of North Carolina this coming Monday. Please pass this along to growers and point them to the frost prediction tool in Peanut Notes No. 234 2023. The grower can get an estimate of risk for their locations using this tool. If frost is predicted, do not dig after today. There needs to be 72 hours between digging and frost. Late-maturing peanuts will be most susceptible. I would not dig those today or anytime between now and the predicted frost on Monday. That is 96 hours.
Drying time allows two important things to happen. First, kernels dry and that minimizes the likelihood of freezing and thawing of cells in the kernel. Secondly, when kernels dry they also shrink. This allows a layer of insulation to develop between the kernel and shell. Peanuts placed in the Seg 2 category (damaged kernels) which can be caused by freeze damage are purchased at the price for oil. This price is much lower than contract prices.
