Some fields have escapes of yellow nutsedge (and I suspect purple nutsdge in some cases.) The nutsedge is well ahead of the peanuts and the peanuts are small. The growth stage is too early for Cadre or Impose and possibly too early for a full rate (1 quart/acre) of Basagran. One alternative to these herbicides is to buy time with Gramoxone plus Basagran (8 ounces/acre) plus a residual Group 15. This treatment will by no means completely kill the nutsedge but it will suppress it. In a couple of weeks, the peanuts will be large enough to spray either Cadre/Impose or a higher rate of Basagran. The Basagran rate applied with Gramoxone can be increased to 1 pint, but I have seen higher rates of Basagran reduce control of annual grasses (not nutsedge, but grasses like broadleaf signalgrass, Texas panicum, etc.) from Gramoxone. If you have purple nutsedge, and if there is a lot of it, your only option is Cadre/Impose. But small peanuts do not need to be treated with Cadre/Impose. In 2024 Peanut Information, we have a table that indicates the rotation restrictions for Cadre/Impose and other herbicides with significant residual activity.
