Peanuts After Peanuts After a Previous Long Rotation Peanut Notes No. 32 2025

Question:

If I have a long rotation (about 15 years since peanuts before planting peanuts in a field in 2024,) how will peanuts do if I go back to peanuts in 2025?

Jordan:

I don’t have good data on this but planting peanuts in this scenario will be better than planting with a shorter history back to back. The long rotation will really help prior to 2024 and 2025 peanuts. I’m not as concerned about peanut diseases as I am nematodes unless you had a lot of soybeans over the past 15 years. That’s almost as yield limiting as peanuts. When we expanded acreage in the central coastal plain years ago, some folks went back to back and did okay. But yields were lower the next year. Hard to put percent on it. I’d say if you had mostly corn or cotton during the 15 years, you might be down 5% with the second year of peanuts. If you had a lot of soybeans in that field, I suspect yields would be off by at least 10%.
