I was recently asked what to spray for thrips once peanuts have emerged. This was in the context of thrips breaking through imidacloprid applied in the seed furrow at planting. Poor control of thrips with imidacloprid is not unexpected. We have documented a decline in performance of imidacloprid in peanuts in North Carolina. Resistance to imidacloprid in thrips has been documented in the state.
The question is whether to keep using acephate (Orthene) or move to Hemi SC (Spinetoram). Dominic Reisig indicated that in northeastern North Carolina, growers should use Hemi rather than acephate. Resistance to acephate is suspected in that region. Acephate is still a reasonable option in other areas of North Carolina.
80/20 surfactant at 1 quart per 100 gallons is recommended with Hemi. We have not conducted a lot of research with Hemi applied with herbicides. We generally have had no issues when herbicides and acephate were applied together. We suspect no major issues with Hemi, but we have not documented this (this is on our list of things to do.)
