Collapse ▲Question:
Grower sent me this over the weekend. Not sure what’s going on with these?
Jordan:
There looks to be Blazer injury (minor speckling) but the yellowing would be something Basagran would do. Is it uniform across the field. The close up helps but a broader view would too.
How does the new growth look?
Follow Up:
I’d say the newest growth doesn’t have any of the same symptoms.
It’s mostly in the top, edges of the canopy. Storm and Butyrac have been the most recent post. No Basagran or Blazer. It’s kind of spread throughout a lot of the field.
Jordan:
Storm has both Basagran and Blazer in it. Basagran can give that yellowing on occasion. New growth is the key.
Follow Up:
Ah okay. I didn’t realize that. What’s the reason for occasional yellowing?
Jordan:
Not really sure. Did they use crop oil?
Follow Up:
Yes a quart of crop oil. Also had 21 oz of clethodim in it too. He says they’re looking much better than last week. Think he said they sprayed on June 13th.
Jordan:
I’ve seen that on occasion with Basagran and crop oil.
Follow Up:
So the crop oil is needed with the Butyrac and Storm? He said he’s been getting by putting the clethodim in and not getting antagonism
Jordan:
No, crop oil is not needed with Storm plus 2,4-DB. In my experience, 80/20 nonionic surfactant is adequate. However, if you are mixing these herbicides with Clethodim (annual grass control,) you would need to use crop oil concentrate rather than 80/20 nonionic surfactant.
That’s also a high rate of Clethodim. It is formulated as an emulsifiable concentrate, and with that much formulated product, you create more potential for injury. Especially if sprayed when hot.
At 21 oz of Clethodim he is overcoming the antagonism. Highest legal rate is 16 oz as a single application. You can apply more over the season, however.
