The following are notes provided at the recent plot tour in Martin County on September 17.

The NC crop still struggles in some places. It looks great in some places. My yield estimate is 4100 pounds per acre. The central and southern areas of the state seem to have missed the recent rains. The northeast received rain out of this system.
From a variety standpoint, we have large-plot trials in the following counties with Bailey II, Emery, NC 20, and NC 21. On two stations, we also have several more varieties including runners and Valencia. But the core Virginia market types are in the following counties:
Bladen
Wayne
Greene
Wilson
Martin
Bertie 1
Bertie 2
Washington
Hertford
Northampton
Edgecombe
Peanut Belt Research Station
Upper Coastal Plain Research Station
Trials in Northampton and Hertford are likely dug.
We had good stands of Bailey II, Emery and NC 21. Stands of NC 20 were good in most cases but not perfect. This could impact yield.
We plan to make disease evaluations when possible and we will collect market grade samples.
Pod maturity has been similar in most cases among varieties. All varieties will be dug on the same day.
We (along with Jacob Forehand) are working on developing a variety selection tool. It will be early 2026 before NC State will be able to construct the tool. We are on their list.
In August there were thoughts that the crop would be early. Some peanuts planted in April are mature. Across NC for peanuts emerging May 15, we just hit 2600 DD56. 15% were planted in June. Long fall ahead.
