Question:
Do you have any recommendations for peanuts that are shrinking from the hull now? I have been asked would it be better to go ahead and dig those peanuts? I know for a lot of peanuts it is just on the sandiest parts of the field where the plants are drying up. I know we are supposed to get some rain later this week, but I am not sure if it will amount to anything.
Jordan:I think there are some rattling in shell, but even on the same plant some are still attached. With dry soil conditions, I think the peanuts detached from hull are just as safe in the ground as they are above ground. If they stay underground, there is still a chance some that are still attached to hull will gain in maturity. Once dug, vines die in further maturation stops. Even if only half the pods are still attached and gain in maturity, that’s about a 5% increase in yield over a 10-day period of time.
Assuming vines are still green.
