Zinc Availability in Composted Versus Poultry Litter Peanut Notes No. 191 2023

Jordan Question:

Would you expect more or less problems with compared swine waste versus poultry litter if you have the same amount of actual zinc?

Kulesza:

My expectation would be equal amounts of zinc would mean equal amounts of problems.

Gatiboni:

Agreed. I would expect the same. However, you may have Zn more associated with organic compounds in the PL as it is a solid material. In this situation, you would have a “slow release” effect depending on the decomposition rate. If that is true, swine liquid waste would show Zn toxicity before PL. After a while they would be similar.

Jordan Note to Agent for Farmer:

I checked with a few other folks and the consensus is that zinc would be the same in poultry litter or composted swine manure in terms of amount. However, the poultry litter zinc might be available more slowly compared with composted waste. Can you pass that along? I'll also post the e-mail string on the portal.
