I'm beginning to get questions about correcting issues associated with nitrogen fixation when inoculant performs poorly. We cover a lot of these questions on pages 24-27 in 2023 Peanut Information. Note that in Table 3-6 we address the financial return on a broadcast application of ammonium sulfate to address various percentages of nitrogen deficient peanuts. Based on our yield data and cost of nitrogen (the rate needed to correct the deficiency, 500 pounds of AMS,) the field needs to have about half of it showing a nitrogen deficiency to break even. Seeing half of the field with yellow peanuts all year long is something few people can stand, regardless of the cost of correcting the issue. That might warrant a broadcast application regardless of the percentage of yellow people. We all need to sleep at night.
