Banding Gypsum Peanut Notes No. 103 2020

Question:

I have a question that I hope you can help me with. We are having trouble sourcing landplaster for our customer base. There is a granulated gypsum (24% calcium) on the market that is available in Va. Is it plausible that peanut growers could band apply this available gypsum over the row at a reduced rate vs bulk applied landplaster? If this is possible it might offer an option that would mitigate the landplaster shortage.

Jordan answer:

Gypsum is broadcast for logistical reasons to cover acres in a relatively short period of time.  The product is only needed in about an 18 inch band over the row where pegging occurs.  Gypsum was banded many years ago over the row and worked well.  If equipment can deliver a band of the contemporary products it would work fine.  The question is labor and time needed to accomplish this.  But in reality about half of what is currently broadcasted does not contribute to peanuts.
