We have received several questions about damage from burrower bug. If damage is high enough, peanuts move from Seg 1 to Seg 2. I reached out to entomologists for an update on managing this pest in peanuts (Dominic Reisig, Tim Bryant, Mark Abney.) Here is a brief summary:
Molboard plow is the most effective option right now to suppress this pest.
The pest is a greater problem in reduced till than conventional tillage.
The pest tends to be more prominent under dry conditions.
This pest feeds on a number of different plants and can move into peanut fields.
Information is limited for the impact of crop rotation and variety on damage from this pest.
There are currently no insecticides that suppress this pest in peanuts.
Scouting techniques and predictions of what fields will be impacted that can be used by growers are limited.
The entomologists listed above are working hard at developing a solution for this pest and many others. Burrower bug is proving to be a very challenging pest in peanuts.
