Question:
Will a peg with a pencil eraser size nut (or smaller) today have time to mature?
Jordan:
Of course it depends on the fall, but for brown category, November 1. For harvestable pods in orange or rust color, maybe October 20. Maybe on both.
Jordan follow up:
Based on planting date work we have done, having pegs at this time or a little earlier was similar to a June 15 planting date. Yield will be about 25% lower than May planting dates in most years. We have some of that information in the production guide.
Note that late peg formation on peanut from an early planting date is likely to respond differently than a late forming peg for a late planting date. Vegetative growth and the number of pegs set are likely different. However, the planting date results are currently our best estimate of yield differences.
*See table 3-17 (yield response to planting date) on page 37, table 11-1 (approximate number of days between each defined growth stage,) and 11-2 (projected date at a certain growth stage and when peanut will reach optimum maturity) (page 190) in 2024 Peanut Information for more information on the above response to the question.
