Dan Anco Comments Clemson Peanut Notes No. 207 2024

Attached are a few pictures from pod maturity samples from dryland fields. The first two are from test plot strips in a dryland field in Blackville and the third is from a sample shared by James Thomas. The Georgia 06G sample is fairly typical for 124 days and would benefit from being checked again in another two weeks. The Bailey II sample from 118 DAP shows some more maturity compared to the sample from a different location from 124 DAP. Virginia types like Bailey II/Emery/Sullivan we generally target around 70% orange/brown/black pods for optimal maturity. This is not uncommon for different locations to show different maturities as local weather and soil characteristics are highly variable, particularly rainfall. As a general rule of thumb, it is good to start checking fields for pod maturity around two weeks before their general maturity range. Better to check early than late. Evaluating samples helps to prioritize field digging plans and helps avoid surprises in maturity progression. A general reminder, pulling samples from different representative areas of a field give a better overall idea of the field's maturity level.
