Dan Anco Comments Clemson Peanut Notes No. 52 2024

A few questions have come up on how AgLogic is compared to Thimet. Both are great granular products for peanut. AgLogic is better on reducing thrips injury and aiding early season growth, whereas Thimet is a bit better for TSW reduction and adds a touch of leaf spot management. Many newer and current varieties have improved TSW resistance, and that combined with planting more into May gives flexibility to choice of in-furrow insecticide. Some folks have noted AgLogic to flow a bit better during application. Yield has been competitive with both.

What about applying inoculant after a field has been bottom plowed and rotated out of peanut 4+ years? Rather than doubling the rate of inoculant to buffer against a failure to inoculate, a better approach is using two different sources of inoculant. Better still, combining two methods of application (liquid + peat granular/seed treatment inoculant) helps to avoid issues on the product-side or application-side should a stop up or other issue occur.

For yield, the top five runners from our trial data have included Georgia 16HO, TUFRunner 297, FloRun 331, FloRun T61, and Georgia 12Y. 16HO and 331 availability has been limited in cases. T61 is a newer one compared to 297, though both have done well in our tests. 297 has a larger seed, which some folks saw more dryland drought stress with it compared to something like 06G in a year like 2019. 20VHO has done alright in our tests but tended more to be middle of the road. Between 297 and 20VHO, 297 has been for us more of a consistent performer, though if we get a stressful year it might suffer more under dryland conditions. 20VHO has a nice small canopy size. 12Y has a smaller seed size, making it a good option for dryland, and has the best white mold resistance out of these.
