Frost Update Peanut Notes No. 240 2024

(Updated: Oct. 17, 2024, 4 a.m.)

This week has been a roller coaster ride in terms of frost in northeastern NC. If you followed the previous posts, you can see how peanut farmers in counties on the edge of weather that could create a frost event have to deal with uncertainties. Yesterday (October 16), the prediction tool indicated that temperatures would not be low enough to have a frost at Lewiston-Woodville or Greenville (North Carolina), while last night (Wednesday night) and this morning (Thursday), the prediction was that frost was possible on Friday morning (the tool defines this as the time from 10 pm Thursday through 10 am Friday) in Lewiston-Woodville (but not Greenville.) A few degrees can make a big difference. Wind certainly impacts frost.

From Saturday (October 19) through Thursday (October 24), low temperatures at Lewiston-Woodville are predicted to be 43 to 53 F. Based on my phone app, weather looks clear through late next week. Mostly sunny with a couple of days with clouds. An image of the phone app for Rich Square is provided. It is sunny with no clouds predicted during this time period.
