Gypsum Analysis Peanut Notes No. 77 2023

(Updated: June 1, 2023, 6:36 a.m.)

The following links provide information on gypsum analysis and interpretation. The rates of gypsum we use on page 29 in 2023 Peanut Information are based on the percent calcium sulfate. Note that in the Gyp Soil product that value is 85% with a rate of 1,200 pounds product per acre. These rates are adequate for Virginia market type varieties. We have not observed higher yields or quality when rates above these are applied. In some cases, yields and grades are the same with lower rates than those in the table compared with the suggested rate. However, there are many instances where a clear difference has been observed when comparing the suggested rate on page 29 with lower rates (in favor of the suggested rate.) We have also seen issues with higher rates of gypsum on soils with lower pH.
