It is very important that we follow product labels closely. This includes pesticide rates, timing of application, and frequency of applications. One of the most important restrictions on pesticide use is the pre harvest interval or PHI. All pesticides have these and they are related primarily to residue tolerances that were established for each crop and each pesticide used in that crop. This is a safety issue for consumers and in many or most cases is not related to crop safety. The peanut industry is working hard to establish and maintain both domestic and international markets. Residue of pesticides in crops is an important element in this process. Equipment used to detect residues is very sophisticated. Very low concentrations can now be detected. Whether those residues pose a risk is an important discussion. However, limits are set and we must abide by them. One way to do so is honor the PHI that is established. This helps keep residues below limits set by the markets we are seeking.
