Question:
David, you mentioned at the peanut meeting about using K-Mag. How much would you recommend per acre?
Jordan:
We used 100 pounds per acre. We have conducted that trial for several years and only observed a yield and financial return increase when the K index was 22-33 in 2025. Tim (Britton) took a normal soil sample at pegging just before he applied the product. I do believe in the numbers given we can observe K deficiencies late in the season in some fields in some years.
This is a relatively low rate of K, so I don’t have major concerns about the K interfering with calcium nutrition. Not sure I’d apply it across all acres unless I had a sense of K levels. If you do, I suspect you’ll get a response in some cases but not all. Not sure how it will pencil out in the end across all acres.
Follow Up:
Applied 200 lbs of K at bedding so that the K would be in the row bed. I’ve always thought or found that the sulfur did more on light soils than the K. I just want to make the most peanuts I can but don’t want to waste money.
Jordan:
Hopefully the gypsum will supply additional sulfur. You likely have adequate K if you made an application at planting. Do you apply the K before bedding or after? Just want to make sure I'm tracking what you are doing.
Follow Up:
Before bedding, I wanted it in the row.
Jordan:
Great! That’s what I thought.
