Leafhopper Question Peanut Notes No. 177 2022

Question:

What's known on yield effects of hopper burn? I know we use 15-20% symptomatic threshold and I have sprayed for them a good bit but I've never seen data showing what's at risk if we let them go. Spider mite risk weighs on my mind heavily using a pyrethroid now.

Jordan:

30-40% burn is the number I recall. First, are there active insects? Might not be this late in the year. The burn was likely caused a month ago and the insect populations have crashed.  But if they are active a pyrethroid would control them. I understand completely the concern over mites, but depending on where you are risk for mites could be low. Presence of active insects is key to the decision.

Follow up:

Thanks, they are still present and peanuts are somewhat drought stressed. I think I will ride them out and hopefully the population is declining.

Jordan:

That might be a good choice at this point. Sometimes our eyes are drawn to the problem and it looks worse than it is. This time of year we typically have a lot of foliage to compensate for the foliage with burn. Earlier in the year we have less foliage ad the burn can be at a higher percentage and have a bigger impact.
