Nitrogen at Planting Peanut Notes No. 46

Question:
Would 100 pounds per acre of ammonium sulphate put out before bedding peanut land help anything? I heard a farmer up this way tried it last year and thought it helped. I don’t know of any yield data from it though.

Jordan:

In general I do not think so. There are some really good farmers with irrigation in Gates County on very coarse sands that put N out around planting. The goal on those soils is to get the plants moving as quickly as possible so the plants are large and shade soil when pegging begins. On those soils, there is limited residual N from the previous crop and the applied N is of value. However, on many peanut soils there is no improvement in growth or yield.
