Peanut Nodulation Peanut Notes No. 199 2024

(Updated: Aug. 16, 2024, 8:02 a.m.)
Question:
What is the minimum number of nodules on the peanut plant‘s roots for adequate nitrogen fixation?
Jordan:

15 nodules at 45 days after planting on the taproot. At this time of year on healthy plants you will see many more. Well over 100.

Follow up:

Thanks for the heads up on the AMS. Last night, I spoke to a scout who said that several growers in that area had been doing that lately with rapid green them up!

Jordan:

If true N deficiency it certainly helps. If just due to cloudy weather and wet, I’m skeptical of getting the money back.

*See page 28 in 2024 Peanut Information, Table 3-7, for recommended rates of ammonium sulfate to address a TRUE nitrogen deficiency (yellow peanuts with almost no nodules present.)
